This week has been our busiest and most exciting yet! Year 2 have worked unbelievably hard this half term and we are so proud of them. It’s been a big change but they have settled in so well, worked their socks off and we think the iPads this week has been the perfect reward! It was so exciting seeing the children receive their iPads. There were so many smiles and even happy tears. It really showed us how appreciative the children were to receive something so special. Although it is going to take us all some time to get used to using them in school, we will all learn together how to make the most of them during every learning opportunity.
Apart from receiving our iPads this week, we have been busy in all subjects! In English, Year 2 have created their own non-chronological report on giant squid. In Maths we have been learning how to exchange one ten to ten ones to help us with subtraction which is one of the trickiest concepts to learn in Year 2. We think they’ve done amazingly! In History, RE and Science, we’ve been finishing off our topics by creating double page spreads on all we’ve learnt or taking part in quizzes! We will be using our iPads for Art on Friday to create our own picture of a fruit hot air balloon! You may see these on the iPads at home!
This week, Year 2 have been writing non-fiction texts about crocodiles! Ask them to share some of their interesting facts with you! In Maths they have been exploring adding and subtracting tens and ones from two-digit numbers. They have been comparing and contrasting the lives and work of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole in History and exploring the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, and how it is celebrated, in RE.
Yesterday in Science the children had a lot of fun exploring how germs are spread when we don’t wash our hands. They rubbed ‘germs’ (a glitter mixture) on their hands and then touched door handles and pencils. They were shocked to see that the germs from their hands transferred to everything that they touched! They then explored how germs spread when we sneeze. Children ‘sneezed’ (sprayed a bottle of green water) onto a sheet of paper and were disgusted by how many germs were expelled! Finally, in Art, the children experimented with mixing different shades using watercolour paints to accurately depict the root vegetables they were given. Once they achieved the colour that they needed, children then sketched their vegetable and painted it.
This week Year 2 have been very busy! We have been learning features of a non-chronological report and have started building our own report about crocodiles. In maths, we have been adding numbers, comparing number sentences and have started to learn about the inverse used in fact families. We are continuing to develop our understanding of number and learning how we can improve our sentences using adverbs.
In our afternoon lessons we have learnt all about Mary Seacole, which materials would be suitable to make a helmet for a tomato and the story of Hanukkah. We are working on our presentation in our books and being proud of our learning.
