Swimming

All Children in Key Stage 2 (Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 & Year 6) will be going swimming for some of their PE lessons during the 2026-2027 academic year.

Please can you give consent as soon as possible on MCAS.

Where & Why?

Swimming lessons will take place at Hengrove Park Leisure Centre. We will travel to and from the lessons via a coach and/or Minibus. Swimming lessons are part of the national curriculum and must be provided to all children during their Key Stage 2 journey.

When?

The swimming schedule is as follows (*This schedule could be subject to change, if this happens, we will communicate the change at the earliest opportunity).

Year 4 – Term 1 & 2 (Autumn Term) Tuesday 15th September to Tuesday 15th December

Year 5 – Term 3 & 4 (Spring Term) Tuesday 5th January to Tuesday 23rd March

Year 3 – Term 5 (Summer Term 1) Tuesday 13th April to Tuesday 25th May

Year 6 – Term 6 (Summer Term 2) Tuesday 8th June to Tuesday 6th July

How?

We would like children to come to school with their swimming costume or swimming trunks on, underneath their PE kit. This will speed up changing time and will ensure children have a full 30-minute lesson.

Children will be expected to dry and change themselves after their swimming lesson. Please prepare and practice this with your child so that they can do this independently and comfortably.

Cost?

Swimming lessons are a compulsory part of the National Curriculum, so there is no charge for your child to take part. However, the swimming lessons and transport to and from the pool cost the academy over £10,000 each year, which is approximately £5 per pupil per week.

If you are able to support the academy with an optional contribution through MCAS, we would be extremely grateful. We suggest a donation of £5 per family per term, which would help us to keep providing high-quality swimming lessons for all pupils. This contribution is entirely voluntary, and we understand that some families may not be in a position to contribute. Any donation, however small, is greatly appreciated.

What will your child need to bring every week for their swimming lessons?

  • Swimming costume to be worn to school, underneath their PE kit. (Please remember to pack underwear and socks for after swimming).
  • Trainers. (No Crocs or Flip Flops).
  • A towel.
  • Suitable swimming trunks or costume. No bikinis or board shorts. No white trunks or costumes.
  • A suitable bag for wet costume.
  • A drinks bottle.
  • A coat in case it is raining.
  • Goggles are allowed.
  • No jewellery.

Help!

For the swimming lessons to go ahead we require parent/adult volunteers to assist with the supervision of the children every week. Without these volunteers the swimming cannot take place.
