Exceptional Education at the Heart of the Community

PSHE & British Values

This is the overview of our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) & British Values Curriculum which covers all of the knowledge and enquiry skills set out in the National Curriculum for PSHE for Key Stages 1 and 2. The Units are progressive and repeat coverage of the same unit will take children on further and deeper in their understanding. For more details, please see the National Curriculum online for specific year group coverage or speak to your child’s class teacher.

PSHE & British Values Overview

PSHE

In March 2017, the Government announced that Relationships Education would become statutory in all Primary Schools from 2019.

We have implemented ‘Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE’ the (Personal, Social and Health Education) Programme across our school. The Jigsaw programme (jigsawpshe.com) is used by the majority of Bristol primary schools and it offers a comprehensive PSHE curriculum. The lessons build children’s emotional literacy, self-esteem and knowledge of who they are and how they relate to each other and the world in a positive and healthy way.

For more information about the Jigsaw Programme, please seeJigsaw Information Leaflet for Parents and Carers

This programme includes a series of lessons for each year group on RSE (Relationship and Sex Education), which are taught in the summer terms. These lessons form two units called ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me’ which are carefully designed to meet the needs of the age and stage of development of the children as they progress through the primary phase.

The key aims of the units are to:

  • Help young people develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age, development, etc.
  • Support young people to have positive self-esteem and body image, and to understand the influences and pressures around them.
  • Enable young people to understand and respect their bodies and be able to cope with changes to their bodies without fear or confusion.

British Values

At Oasis Academy Marksbury Road we promote British Values throughout our PSHE curriculum (Jigsaw), through our wider curriculum and through our everyday life at the academy.

In addition to this we are committed to the direct teaching of British Values through an amazing book called ‘We are all born free’. This award-winning book of thirty beautiful illustrations interprets our human rights for children of ages 5+. Illustrators include Axel Scheffler (of Gruffalo fame), Korky Paul and John Burningham.
